‘“Temperatures in the US plummeted to historic lows overnight as parts of the country were subjected to -35C conditions. The East Coast has seen little respite from the Arctic conditions since Winter Storm Grayson strengthened at an astonishing rate to become a “bomb cyclone”, dumping 18 inches of snow on parts of the US. Mount Washington in New Hampshire vied for the title of world’s coldest place on Sunday as millions of Americans shivered in plummeting temperatures. The 6,000-foot peak in the north-east US was hit with a wind-chill of -73.3°C while Pituffik in Arctic Greenland and Scott-Amundsen Station in the Antarctic were reported to be basking in about -23°C. But in Australia, dangerous heat is roasting parts of the continent with temperatures not seen in decades. Thermometers in Sydney hit a near-80-year high of 47.3°C on Sunday. Taken together, that means the temperature gap between parts of the east coast of the continental US and the east coast of Australia is about 120°C — a range big enough to send water from solid ice to scalding steam. Sydney endured its hottest temperature in nearly 80 years on Sunday, Australian meteorologists say. The mercury rose to 47.3 degrees Celsius, or 117.14 Fahrenheit, in the Sydney metropolitan area. The hottest temperature ever recorded in the area was 47.8 Celsius degrees (118.04 Fahrenheit) in 1939, the Bureau of Meteorology for the state of New South Wales (NSW) said.”’
